News has emerged that after more than 20 years' campaigning funding for Harborough new hospital has been secured.
Consortium chair Dr David Briggs, in a call to Cllr Phil Knowles, confirmed that there is now an additional £4m of secured funding to deliver 21st century health care for Market Harborough with a completion date of 2014.
Phil Knowles says: "The figure of an additional £6.4m had been confirmed to me in September, but it seems that the business case that has been put together is pointing in the direction of this being another modular build, similar to the £2.4m minor procedure and endoscopy unit that is about to be opened, rather than a brick construction, although this is yet to be finally confirmed. Importantly, I have received assurances from Dr Briggs that the new unit will, within the £4m scheme, see the provision of all the long-awaited and much anticipated services that Harborough needs for the 21st Century."
Phil also took the opportunity to question the plans for any refurbishment/upgrade of the existing St Luke's building which was to have been included in the original £6.4 million figure:
"I have been told that the additional £4 million will be exclusively used for the new build and that all/any refurbishment to any parts pf the current building will be paid for from separate budget headings."
