Do they control traffic as well as the previous ones? Has the phasing of traffic been altered and is it a cause of traffic jamming up?
They are just two of the questions being raised by Cllrs Phil Knowles and Sarah Hill following a string of calls from concerned pedestrians and motorists.
Phil and Sarah say:
"One main consequence of the changes is that traffic south bound in the High Street appears to queue for a much longer period than under the old system. This jam prevents traffic joining the High Street from Church Square in trickles as it used to. This causes queues on occasion back to Roman Way.
"Pedestrians have told us they have found that before the 'green man' illuminates there is long wait, especially at the set near to Wesses. When they do cross the pedestrian lights turn red before they have reached the middle of the road. This is potentially very dangerous as the vehicles start to move.
"We have asked the County Highways Officers to instigate an urgent review of the sequencing and to get back to us as quickly as possible."
A County Council spokesperson has said in reply:
"When the traffic signal equipment at the junction was renewed recently, the opportunity was taken to streamline the sequencing and timings for traffic and pedestrians through more use of automatic vehicle detection. Unfortunately, this has not worked as well as expected in practice and further adjustments are proposed to help improve the situation. We are working to make the adjustments as soon as possible."
