Local Liberal Democrat Chairman Phil Knowles has warmly welcomed remarks by a Lib Dem shadow minister who recently visited the proposed Pennbury "eco-town" site in Harborough District.
Commenting on the recent Commons select committee report that criticises the Government for ignoring major problems faced by New Towns, Liberal Democrat Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary, Julia Goldsworthy MP said:
"With the Government pushing ahead with its unwise and unpopular eco-town plans against the wishes of people across the country, the committee is right to demand that ministers learn the lessons of new towns.
"Regenerating existing areas and building affordable and sustainable housing near public facilities and places of employment is essential.
"Instead, the Government is storing up problems for the future by steamrolling ahead with a programme of isolated car-dependent developments. By ignoring the lessons of the past, eco-towns run the risk of becoming the broken communities of the future.
"Julia has identified a real concern of residents that if the Government ignore the strength of Local opinion and proceed with the development on a site that is of questionable suitability they could simply be creating problems that will be the regrettable legacy we pass to future generations.
